| Downtown Baltimore Child Care's original site was opened in
September 1983 at 806 Park Avenue. Responding to a scarcity of child care
for parents living and working downtown, DBCC was conceived by Stephanie
Reich who worked for the Baltimore City Council and was looking for care for
her two-year old son. She pulled together a consortium of five major
downtown employers and gathered a group of interested and experienced early
childhood professionals. Their goal was to create a center that would
provide the highest quality child care and early education to the downtown
Baltimore Community. This group hired Nancy Kramer (a well-known early
childhood professional with experience in opening centers) as the original
Director. In 1989, responding to an invitation from University of Maryland
At Baltimore, DBCC opened a second site on the campus, at 237 N. Arch
Street. In 2001, Nancy Kramer retired and Margo Sipes, an early childhood
educator with 28 years experience teaching in and administering early
childhood programs became the Executive director. The consortium still
exists today, although several of the original employers have changed.
Membership in DBCC's consortium, allows employers to provide a child care
benefit for their employees that includes admission priority and/or
scholarship assistance. |
